The Best Veggie Burgers
π Made with beans, greens, and other vegetables, these burgers aren't pretending to be meat.
The vegetarian section of the frozen food aisle has undergone a significant transformation, with companies like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat leading the way. While there is a proliferation of vegetarian foods that aim to mimic meat, there is also a growing demand for veggie burgers that celebrate vegetables in their own right. Fortunately, there are now plenty of veggie burger options made with beans, vegetables, and grains, offering a diverse range of styles and flavors.
In a taste test of 12 frozen veggie burgers, variations in size, texture, color, and flavor were evident. Some burgers resembled meat, while others showcased a combination of greens or mixed vegetables. Cooking them on the stovetop revealed satisfying crispness, and larger-sized burgers provided a more substantial eating experience. Chickpea-based burgers fell short in terms of texture and flavor, but bean and grain-based burgers proved to be satisfying options. Standouts included a bean burger with corn and red pepper for its tender texture and crisp exterior, and a mushroom risotto burger with a soft interior and rich mushroom flavor. With a variety of delicious options available, the world of veggie burgers continues to evolve to cater to vegetarian and vegetable enthusiasts.
