EU LEAK OF FOOD WASTE TARGETS
π π₯ The European Commission's proposals for legally binding food waste reduction targets have been leaked - and they are pitifully unambitious. The proposals are for a 30% reduction in household/retail/catering food waste, a 10% reduction in manufacturing food waste by 2030 - with no targets at all for primary production food waste.
By setting a target lower than 50% reduction, the Commission is effectively planning to fail to meet Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 to halve food waste by 2030. By excluding primary production food waste completely, and proposing a pitifully low target of 10% reduction for manufacturing, the Commission has effectively given businesses a free pass to continue wasting food.
Next step is for European Parliament and Council to come up with their positions, before three-way negotiation to finalise. We need to fight tooth and nail for the European Parliament and Council to urgently propose a 50% farm to fork reduction in food waste, so the EU can meet Sustainable Development Goal 12.3.
