Beyond Individual Actions: Unveiling the Real Culprits in the Climate Crisis
ππ‘οΈ This post took 8 months to write.
It's a tough pill to swallow, so buckle up.
Individual actions won't solve the climate crisis.
Instead of talking about "top 10 individual actions to reduce our climate impact", I'd much rather focus on:
π 100 companies responsible for 71% of GHG emissions
π 20 companies responsible for 55% of plastic waste
π USD 1 trillion in fossil fuel subsidies in 2022
That plastic straw, cold shower, or reusable coffee cup won't cut it.
So no, I don't buy into the consumer shaming and blaming game.
Instead, we need to talk about systemic change, and how do people take part in it.
As Clover puts it: "It's not scary to talk about systemic change. It IS scary to pretend there's hope in another 10 years of incrementalism."
PS: I'm not saying that individual actions don't matter.
But it's crazy to put the blame on 8 billion people and their daily habits, instead of handful of companies and politicians.
